What Is A Hernia Repair?

A hernia repair is a specific surgery targeted at treating hernias. A hernia repair surgery aims to correct weakened abdominal muscle tissues and close off an abnormal passage. During the procedure, our doctor will push the protruding tissue back into its proper place and then close off any openings in the surrounding muscle with sutures.

In most cases, a special mesh may be used to reinforce the area. Hernia repairs are typically performed as inpatient procedures, requiring the patient to stay at least a day for monitoring after the procedure.

Recovery times vary depending on the individual, but most people can return to normal activities within a week or so.

What Conditions Is A Hernia Repair Used To Treat?

A hernia repair is most commonly used to treat inguinal hernias. This type of hernia occurs when a small portion of the intestines bulges through a weak spot in the abdominal wall. This can cause severe pain and, if left untreated, can lead to serious complications.

In addition, hernia repairs are also used to treat:

The surgery is typically performed as an inpatient procedure. It involves sewing the weakened area of the abdominal wall closed, and a mesh patch is usually used to reinforce the repair.

What To Expect Before & After A Hernia Repair With G & L Surgical Clinic

Hernia repair is a standard surgical procedure, and there are a few things you can do to prepare for the surgery.

These are the steps you should follow:

  • Avoid eating or drinking for at least six hours before your scheduled surgery.
  • Stop taking any medications that can thin your blood, such as aspirin or ibuprofen.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol 24 hours before the surgery.
  • You should make sure to wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment.

Following these simple tips can help ensure that your hernia repair procedure is safe and successful.

Before you come in for your hernia repair, please be sure to bring the following items with you to the hospital:

  • A list of your current medications,
  • Any allergies you have,
  • A list of your medical conditions,
  • Your insurance information, and
  • An extra pair of loose, comfortable clothing and shoes.

Please also arrange for someone to drive you home after you are discharged (usually at least 1-2 days following the procedure).

If you have any questions about what to bring or how to prepare for your hernia repair procedure, please call our clinic, and we will be happy to assist you.

Prior to hernia repair, your stomach must be empty. For this reason, you will need to fast for at least six hours before the procedure. This means that you should not eat or drink anything during this time, including water.

You may brush your teeth, but be sure to avoid swallowing any water. If you are scheduled for morning surgery, you should not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before.

If your surgery is scheduled for the afternoon, you should not eat or drink anything after 6 AM on the day of your surgery. If you have any concerns or questions about fasting, please call our clinic, and we will gladly assist you.

Depending on the medication that you are taking, you may be required to stop your medication prior to your procedure.

You will be required to:

  • Stop taking blood thinners (anticoagulants) at least several days before surgery.
  • Stop any blood pressure or diabetes medication 1 day before the surgery.
  • Inform our doctor if you happen to have any supplements or over-the-counter medicines taken before the surgery.

You are advised to check with our doctor beforehand to ensure you take the appropriate steps to prepare for your hernia surgery.

There are no specific pre-admission tests required prior to hernia repair surgery. However, as with any surgery, your medical history and current health condition will be thoroughly reviewed during the pre-operative appointment.

You may be asked to have a blood test and/or a urinalysis performed for laboratory testing.

In addition, you may undergo a physical examination and/or EKG depending on your age and health history. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns about the pre-operative process. We want you to feel as comfortable as possible before your procedure.

Most hernia repairs have short recovery periods, especially if they are performed laparoscopically. Most patients feel well enough to return to normal activities within a few days. However, it is important to avoid strenuous activity for at least four to six weeks in order to allow the incision to heal properly.

There is also a small risk of developing a seroma, or fluid-filled cavity, at the site of the incision. If this occurs, it is usually small and will resolve independently. However, larger seromas may require aspiration or surgical drainage.

Overall, most people who have hernia repair surgery experience a quick and uncomplicated recovery.

Most people who have hernia surgery do not need any follow-up procedures. The chances of having a recurrent hernia are low if your surgery was successful and you do not have any other risk factors.

However, there is a small chance that the hernia could come back. If it does, you might need another surgery to repair it.

The Do’s and Don’ts After A Hernia Repair Surgery

Adhering to our doctor’s post-operative instructions is essential for a successful recovery.

These instructions will encompass important information like medication management, wound care techniques, and appropriate activity levels. Not only will this compliance prevent complications, but it will also encourage a faster and more comfortable recovery.

A balanced diet, rich in protein, fibre, and essential nutrients, accelerates healing and lowers the risk of complications.

Drinking plenty of water aids in toxin elimination and maintains bodily functions. Incorporating foods high in vitamins and minerals bolsters your immune system, protecting you from potential infections.

Maintaining cleanliness and dryness around the surgical site is crucial for preventing infections and ensuring proper healing. Following our doctor’s guidelines on incision care minimises the chances of complications.

This may involve changing dressings regularly, gently cleaning the area, and avoiding submerging the wound in water until fully healed.

Post-operative pain or discomfort that exceeds typical expectations warrants immediate consultation with our doctor. Ignoring such symptoms can lead to complications, a longer recovery, and potential long-term issues. Early intervention addresses any underlying problems and facilitates a smoother recovery.

You are advised to check with our doctor beforehand to ensure you take the appropriate steps to prepare for your hernia surgery.

Engaging in strenuous activities too soon after surgery puts unnecessary strain on the surgical site, potentially affecting the healing process. Instead, gradually increase your activity levels according to our doctor’s recommendations.

Regular follow-up appointments enable our doctor to monitor your recovery and promptly address potential concerns closely. Skipping these appointments may hinder your recovery progress and negatively impact your surgical outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

In some cases, your doctor may require a bowel prep one day before the surgery. This may mean no consuming of solids or liquids after midnight on the day of your surgery.

The recovery period for hernia surgery depends on several factors, including the size and location of the hernia and the overall health of the patient. Most patients require between 3 and 6 weeks to fully recover from surgery.

You can maintain your normal diet. If your stomach is upset, try bland, low-fat foods like plain rice, broiled chicken, toast, and yogurt. Drink plenty of fluids (unless advised otherwise by your doctor). It it common that bowel movements become irregular right after a hernia surgery.

Avoid foods that cause constipation such as dairy products, red meat, processed foods (pizza, frozen dinners, pasta), sugar products (cakes, pies, pastries, doughnuts) and caffeinated drinks.

Avoid carbonated beverages for about six weeks after the hernia surgery to reduce complications such as gas. Avoid chewing gum and drinking through a straw as this can increase the intake of air into the stomach, further leading to bloating.

Physiotherapy may be recommended after hernia surgery to help with recovery and prevent future hernias from occurring. Hernia surgery typically involves repairing a weak or damaged area in the abdominal wall, and physiotherapy can help to strengthen the muscles in that area. It is important to follow the recommendations of a healthcare professional, such as a physiotherapist or surgeon, regarding the appropriate type and frequency of physiotherapy after hernia surgery.

Most people can return to their regular activities within a few weeks of surgery. However, it is important to avoid strenuous activities, such as lifting heavy objects or exercising, for at least six weeks to allow the surgical site to heal properly. Once the surgical site has healed, you can gradually resume your normal activity level.

Gentle exercises, such as walking, can help you heal faster. Avoid lifting anything heavy or performing strenuous activities for at least four weeks.

Studies indicate that while there is always some risk of recurrence after a hernia repair surgery, such an outcome is relatively rare. Several factors can influence the risk of your hernia recurrence, including your age, lifestyle, medical history, and genetics.
